Fellow American Sloane Stephens faces a Goliath of a test tonight as she will battle the Russian Maria Sharapova. Sharapova the world’s 3rd ranked player, has beaten Stephens in all 3 of the head-to-head meetings in straight sets. Tonight’s match will mark the second time in which both players have met on a hard court surface. Sharapova defeated Stephens 6-4, 6-2 in the 3rd round of the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, Florida in 2012. Stephen holds a 25-16 record in 2013, including a semifinals appearance at the Australian Open and a quarterfinals appearance at Wimbledon. Sharapova holds a 37-6 record in 2013, including wins at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells and the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuggart, Germany. Sharapova was the runner up losing to Serena Williams in the finals of both French Open and the Sony Open in 2013.

Day 1: Western & Southern Open

Cincinnati, Ohio (August 10th, 2013) – The marquee qualifying match of the day featured 20 year old ultra talented Australian Bernard Tomic (World No. 41) vs. 30 year old crafty wild card veteran, Robby Ginepri (World No. 243). Tomic was dressed in his usual Nike duds from head to toe, sporting a yellow Nike Rally Sphere Stripe Polo with Nike White All Court 9 inch shorts. Tomic’s was also wearing the new Nike Vapor 9 Tour Men’s Tennis shoes in the white, armory navy and geyser grey colors. Tomic’s was playing with his usual Yonex VCore XI 98 tennis racquet strung with Babolat VS Thermo 16 Touch tennis string. Ginepri was dressed in Under Armour wearing Propulse 4 Men’s tennis shoes and playing with the Babolat Pure Storm GT.
During the first set both players held serve up to the seventh game of the set. Ginepri broke Tomic after Tomic committed his 3rd double fault of the set. Ginepri powered through with his serve to take a commanding 5-3 lead. Tomic held and then Robby Ginepri proceeded to take the first set 6-4 over Bernard Tomic.
Tomic serves to begin the 2nd set and comes out guns blazing with an ace followed by a lovely forehand winner. The next point Tomic hits a vintage drop shot on Ginepri. Tomic proceeded to roll through the first game effortlessly, this game really showed the talent of Tomic.  Each player held serve until Ginepri broke Tomic to take a 3-2 lead. Ginepri did not look back from there and Tomic seemed to mail it in the rest of the set. Ginepri completed the match defeated Tomic 6-4, 6-2 in only 45 minutes.

Day 1: Western & Southern Open

Cincinnati, Ohio (August 10th, 2013) The Western & Southern Open officially kicked off at 10:00AM where six matches of qualifying went underway. The first session of qualifying matches featured five WTA matches and one ATP match.
On the Grandstand Court, fellow American and World No. 109 Denis Kudla faced off against the Worlds 62nd ranked player, Slovenian Grega Zemlja. Zemlja sponsored by Asics was fully decked out in Asics apparel head to toe. Zemlja shoes of choice were the Asics Gel Solution Speed featuring black and flash yellow. The Slovenian racquet of choice was the Babolat 2012 Pure Drive. His counterpart, Denis Kudla, was using a Tecnifibre TFight 325 for his racquet and he wore a Lacoste Polo with orange and black Asics Gel Solution Speed tennis shoes.
Kudla broke early in the 1st set of the match and took a 2-1 lead. After a pair of holds at 5-3, Kudla breaks Zemlja to take the first set 6-3. The start of the second set Zemlja raced to out an early leading breaking the American in the first game of the 2nd set. Zemlja did not look back from there, taking the 2nd set 6-2.
On to the third and final set, Kudla was looking to rebound after a disappointing second set. Kudola smacked one of his vintage 125MPH serves for a ace to take a 1-0 hold. After a five minute bathroom break after the fifth game of the 3rd set, the 26 year old Zemlja, starting using his experience and took a stranglehold on the match. Greg Zemlja defeated 20 year old American, Denis Kudla 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 and advances on to meet Edouard Roger-Vasselin to earn a spot in the main draw of the Men’s single’s tournament.Kudla


Western & Southern Open Player Draw

Cincinnati, Ohio (August 9th, 2013)– The Western & Southern Open announced both the men’s and women’s draw for the 2013 tournament. The tournament starts tomorrow, August 10th, at 10:00 AM. The tournament is being held at the Linder Family Tennis Center which is 20 miles north of Cincinnati in Mason, Ohio. The day will feature qualifiers from both the men’s and women’s sides of the draw. These players will be competing for a first round spot in the tournament. The day will also be highlighted as “Kids Day” in which an array of tennis activities will be available for kids around the Linder Family Tennis Center complex.
