Tsonga makes his return at the Moselle Open

The Two-time defending champion of the Moselle Open located in Metz, France, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, made his return to singles action after missing nearly three months of the season with a knee injury. Tsonga defeated fellow Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals in his first match since he retired in the second round of Wimbledon.

Tsonga play tested his first match vs. Roger-Vasselin with a new Babolat racquet known as the Babolat Pure Strike. This was the first time Tsonga had used this racquet in competition. The racquet appeared to be a 100 sq. in. head size, but the beam seems to be a little more narrow than his AeroPro Drive Plus. The overall feel seems to be the major change of this new line of racquets.

Babolat has released limited information around the new Pure Strike line of the tennis racquets. Tweets have indicated a mid-October announcement on the release date of the new line.

Around the Open

The first weekend of the 2013 US Open concluded after a memorable Labor Day featuring five top 10 players ATP players including the five time US Open champion, Roger Federer, whom was defeated in the 4th Round by the 31 year old Spaniard, Tommy Robredo.

The 19th seeded Robredo played an excellent match mixing both his one handed slice backhand with his very reliable forehand. Robredo outlasted Federer in a straight set match  7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-4. This was Federer’s earliest exit from US Open since his loss to David Nalbandian (3-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3) in the 4th round of the 2003 US Open. The match between Federer & Robredo was moved from Arthur Ashe Stadium to Armstrong Stadium due to the weather which forced matches to be pushed back. Robredo will face Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals after Nadal defeated Philipp Kohlschrieber 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3, 6-1.

Nadal dropped his first set of the tournament in the 4th round to Kohlschreiber after losing a tiebreaker in the 1st set of the match 7-3. It seemed that after losing the opening set in to Kohlschrieber, Nadal played with a different level of energy and defeated the German handily 6-4, 6-3, 6-1.

The two remaining matches of the day were quite thrilling as the 4th seeded David Ferrer defeated the Serbian, Janko Tipsarevic, in a 4 set match, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(3).  8th seeded Richard Gasquet saved a match point to defeat the hard hitting Canadian, Milos Raonic, in 5 sets, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 2-6, 7-6 (9), 7-5. Ferrer will match up with Gasquet in the quarterfinals, the winner of that match will face the winner of the Rafael Nadal vs. Tommy Robredo match in the semifinals of the US Open.
